Spring Training 2017: Day 1

closeHey, just so you know ... this post is now about 7 years and 1 month old. Please keep that in mind as it very well may contain broken links and/or outdated information.

It’s been two years since I’ve been out to the Cactus League to watch my Cleveland Indians at Spring Training … but it’s time! The tech arsenal is pretty simple this year: my Surface Pro 4, iPhone 7 Plus, Canon PowerShot SX710, and FitBit Charge 2 (I also brought my trusty Garmin nüvi GPS but ended up not using it because the rental car didn’t have a CD player so I couldn’t use my magnetic slot mount and hadn’t brought the beanbag dashboard mount … oops! So I ended up using Waze on my iPhone).

I was at the airport by 6:15am for my flight to Phoenix which landed on-time by 10:30am. While waiting for my brother’s flight to arrive, I picked up the rental car (a black Dodge Challenger … I almost chose a yellow Camaro but the trunk and passenger seats were way too small). By the time I got out of the car rental facility, my brother had landed so I picked him up and we drove directly to Goodyear for our first game.

It was (as usual) a beautiful spring day for baseball in the valley. The sun was pretty hot but we were in the shade by the 5th inning. It was a light crowd for a Thursday, just 5,636 attending, and unfortunately due to a late-game Angels rally, the Tribe lost 5-4.

After the game we drove back (in Phoenix rush-hour traffic) to our hotel in Tempe near the airport and were checked in by about 5:30pm. For dinner my brother and I went to Rehab Burger Therapy near ASU on a recommendation from a friend and it was pretty good (I had the Spicy Mac-and-Cheese Burger).

We turned in a bit early since we were tired due to the time zone change and are going to hike Camelback early tomorrow morning.
