Soggy July 4th, but still saw fireworks

It rained here the entire holiday weekend … the pool was close to overflowing! I wasn’t complaining though because we seriously needed the rain.

Time for the 2010 hurricane season

This past Memorial Day weekend, in addition to the national tradition of grilling out, we also followed our own family tradition of re-stocking the supply closet in preparation for the 2010 hurricane season, which starts today. Let’s hope it doesn’t rain oil anywhere this year.

Finally back to normal (temperatures)

After almost two solid weeks of temperatures in the 40s (and below freezing in some areas, apparently we brought it back with us from Ohio), our normal Florida “winter” weather returned today. Yes, it was finally back in the 70s … I was able to eat lunch outside in the sun and even cook up [...]

Back in Florida

I know it sounds a little harsh, but after spending the past few days in chilly, snowy Ohio for the holidays, we’re glad to be back in Florida. We spent Christmas Eve day doing some last minute shopping and preparations, which included cooking lasagna (in our hotel room) to take to dinner at my aunt’s [...]

Ohio for the holidays

We’re up in Ohio  for Christmas … brrr! Last night we checked into the Marriott at the Tampa Airport using their “Park Here, Fly There” package (a one-night stay with up to 7 days of “free” valet parking). This way we didn’t have to use the remote long-term parking lot and not get up as [...]

Preparations, rehearsal, the ceremony, and the party!

Whew, what a couple of days! It’s late Saturday evening and my little brother is now a married man. Congratulations, kids! Friday morning started with a family breakfast, just the siblings and our parents … something we haven’t done for a very long time (years). The restaurant we had breakfast at was the location for [...]

First named storm of 2009

It’s been a slow start to the 2009 hurricane season … we’re halfway through August and just now have the first named storm, Ana. Of course back in 2004, we had Charley in mid-August and then were hunkering down for Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne in quick succession in September, so it can ramp up quickly! [...]

Hurricane prep

The 2009 hurricane season starts on Monday so we spent some time today re-stocking our hurricane closet. What, you don’t have a closet in your house dedicated to hurricane supplies? Well, you can’t be too prepared here on the Gulf coast. Should we ever need to evacuate all we need to do is throw all [...]

The DTV switchover in hurricane country

So the original February 17th deadline for the digital TV switchover has come and gone but only a handful of stations have shut off their analog signals thanks to the DTV Delay Act. Is everyone confused yet? One thing I don’t think a lot of people here in hurricane country have thought of (even myself, [...]

Brrrrr!

I woke up this morning and it was 38 degrees outside here in central Florida! It’s not even going to break 50 today. This is one of the coldest winters I remember since we moved down here in 2001. Yeah, okay, this is nothing compared to what’s going on up north and in the midwest, [...]
