Sennheiser RF120 wireless headphones

Sennheiser RF

For Christmas I received the Sennheiser RF120 wireless headphones (and charging stand). My old wireless Sony headphones were starting to show their age: the original rechargeable batteries no longer held a charge so I had to use alkalines, the cushioned ear cups were peeling, and there was just too much interference and hard to get a clear signal.

The RF120 comes with a adjustable pair of wireless headphones, with user-replaceable rechargeable batteries, and charging stand. The stand for my Sony headphones was frustrating: you had to sit the ear cups just right to make a connection. By contrast, you just drop the Sennheisers on the metal bar and it makes a charging connection. On the headphones themselves is located a power switch and volume and fine tuning dials. They fit comfortably on my head,  the sound is excellent, and the signal is clear.

My only complaint about using wireless headphones like this is that they’re not really portable, but my Sony headphones weren’t either. If I want to use them in another room, with another TV, I have to unplug everything and move the entire base station to connect to the new device. And on the current cheap TV I’m using, there’s no RCA audio out, just a headphone jack, so I have to leave the base station disconnected from the TV so it doesn’t override the internal speakers when the headphones aren’t in use.

I’m also considering getting a more portable solution, a Bluetooth transmitter like this one. That would be a lot easier to take on the road, or quickly set up in another room if I want to listen to something privately with a Bluetooth headset (like my Plantronics M50). That wouldn’t have the rich sound experience of the Sennheiser RF120, but definitely more portable. Sennheiser makes Bluetooth headphones, like the MM 550-X, but those are a little outside of my budget for headphones.
