Memorial Day Weekend in Key West: Day 3

closeHey, just so you know ... this post is now about 9 years and 10 months old. Please keep that in mind as it very well may contain broken links and/or outdated information.

We got up early this morning with plans to go to Sarabeth’s right when it opened for breakfast. Somehow, however, we unfortunately missed the fact that it’s only open for breakfast on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. šŸ™ Instead, we went over to Glazed Donuts on Eaton and picked up a half-dozen and then walked down the block to Starbucks for hot drinks. On our way out of Old Town, we remembered to swing past the Southernmost Point again and this time were able to get a decent family photo with the monument without having to wait in line. Shortly after 9:00am we were back in New Town and on the road back home.

We expected the Memorial Day traffic out of the Keys to be heavy, and our expectations were met. The highway signs out of Key West reported an accident atĀ mile-marker 51 on the Overseas Highway around Marathon.Ā The accident seemed to be cleared by the time we got there, but around northern Islamorada and Key Largo the traffic suddenly turned into stop-and-go for several miles, which slowed our progress. By 12:45pm we were back in Homestead on the mainland and half an hour later stopped at The Falls in Miami so my daughter could do some shopping at the American Girl store, we could walk the dog, and get some lunch.

After Miami, traffic was normal through Alligator Alley and then turning north on I-75 towards home. We made another extended stop in Bonita Springs to check out Pottery As Art. We had been there last summer during our family vacation in Naples and wanted to pick up some new pottery for the lanai.

With the new planter loaded into the back of the truck, we resumed the trek home, arriving just around 8:00pm. It was a long driving day, but it was a fun weekend visiting the Conch Republic. Next time, maybe we’ll take the ferryĀ instead of driving.
